Choke…on this.
Did you know it’s on the banned book list? I didn’t, not until I saw it in the book store window while on vacation in Mirror Lake, with a gigantic red “Banned” ribbon wrapped around it. The bookstore window display reminded me a lot of Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451.” One of my all time favorite novels.
[ And the film "Choke," which I paid $10.25 to see tonight, was worth every cent. It was, one of the more loyal reproductions, in a novel to screen sense, that I've seen in a very long time. Many aspects contributed to this; the atmospheric film quality, the stark and more melodramatic aspects of addicition played out through characters that actually translated well from the novel to the screen. The personalities that held ground and didn't just fill role space, most of all, and for me in this instance it made all the difference: the plot and story loyalty. The film didn't deviate that far from the novel itself, which as film productions go, is refreshing.]

Events like BANNED BOOKS WEEK are essential, drawing attention to issues of censorship and freedom of expression that, sadly, continue to dog us even in the 21st century. Even in, supposedly, free societies. Quietly books are pulled from school library shelves or removed from curriculums because somebody (sometimes only ONE PERSON) finds them offensive. Let the light shine on these people and send them scurrying back to their faith holes, their hate holes, their caves of intolerance…
Banned books are something I always seek out. More often then not it is simply one person fearing what the book could say to someone that would make them realize different things about themselves, their relationships, their society, etc etc. That the person trying to ban the book would not want to see because it scares them.
That being said Im glad you liked Choke. I can’t remember the last time I saw a movie that made me just made me smile while the credits rolled for a good while with a big ol grin on my face.
